Quilted Arming Hood with Collar for Reenactment & LARP

What Does It Offer You?

  • Protection and Comfort: The thick, approximately 8mm quilted padding effectively dampens impacts and protects your head, neck, and shoulders. No more uncomfortable pressure points from a heavy helmet or the edges of a mail coif! The collar also protects the shoulders and collarbones from chafing against a cuirass or other parts of plate armour.
  • Quality Materials: Crafted from heavy-duty canvas and proper padding. This isn't some flimsy synthetic substitute – this is a piece of kit you can rely on.
  • Practical Details: Thanks to the two leather straps with buckles on the shoulders, you can easily and quickly attach your pauldrons directly to the hood. The fastening at the front of the neck ensures the hood stays securely in place.
  • Versatile Dimensions: The collar width is approximately 54 cm (21.3 inches) and the hood height is approximately 47 cm (18.5 inches), ensuring a comfortable fit for most individuals.

With this hood, wearing your armour will be significantly more comfortable. You can fully concentrate on the fight, your historical role, or simply the experience, without being distracted by discomfort. It's an essential accessory for any warrior, knight, or adventurer who values authenticity and functionality in their gear.

Historical Use:

Padded garments, known by various names such as gambeson, aketon, arming doublet, or indeed arming caps and hoods, were a fundamental part of armour for many centuries, especially during the Middle Ages. They were worn by virtually all combatants, from foot soldiers and archers to heavily armoured knights.

  • Standalone Protection: For poorer soldiers or lighter troops (e.g., archers), padded armour often represented the only, or primary, form of torso protection. It was relatively inexpensive and surprisingly effective against cuts and arrows from a distance.
  • Under Armour: For knights and soldiers wearing plate or mail armour, the padded layer (gambeson, arming coat, hood) served as essential cushioning. It absorbed the shock transmitted through the metal armour to the body, prevented chafing, and helped to distribute the weight of the armour more evenly. Individual pieces of plate armour were often attached to it using points (laces) or straps.

Modern Use:

Today, you'll find this padded hood useful primarily for:

  • Historical Fencing and Re-enactment: To increase safety and comfort under helmets and other armour parts.
  • LARP (Live Action Role Play): As part of a costume and a protective layer for warrior, knight, and adventurer characters.
  • Theatre and Film: As an authentic-looking component of historical costumes.
  • Collecting: As an interesting addition to a collection of historical arms and armour.

Interesting Historical Tidbit:

Did you know that padded garments like the gambeson were sometimes so effective that some combatants preferred them even over mail armour, particularly when facing blunt weapons (like maces)? The thick layer of fabric and padding could absorb the kinetic energy of a blow better than rings alone, which, while stopping a blade, could still allow the impact to cause fractures or internal injuries.

Product Care:

To ensure your hood lasts a long time:

  • Cleaning: If soiled, hand washing in lukewarm water with a mild detergent is recommended. Avoid harsh chemicals and bleach. You can also try removing dirt locally with a damp cloth and soap.
  • Drying: Do not wring the hood. Gently squeeze out excess water and allow it to air dry flat, away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Do not tumble dry.
  • Storage: Store in a dry and ventilated place.

With this quilted hood, you gain not only functional protection but also a piece of honest kit that enhances the authenticity of your historical attire and makes your time spent in the role of a medieval combatant more comfortable. Be ready for battle – in comfort!
