Padded Arming Collar (Gorget), 13th-15th Century

Functional Design and Quality Materials

This arming collar is crafted from heavy-duty cotton canvas with a dense, triple-layered padded core. The meticulous diamond-shaped quilting ensures the padding remains evenly distributed and provides maximum protection even after rigorous use. At the front, the collar fastens easily with a practical black leather strap and a historically accurate brass buckle. On the shoulders, you'll find two sturdy, black-finished leather straps, securely riveted and ready for attaching your pauldrons (shoulder plates).

Available in three colours: Natural (Ecru), Black, and Brown.

History and Use in Combat

An Essential Layer Under Plate Armour

Similar padded collars were a common part of a knight's and soldier's equipment from the 13th to 15th centuries, especially with the rise and development of plate armour. They were worn under a maille coif, an aventail, or later, a plate gorget and cuirass. Their primary role was to protect the collarbones, neck, and shoulders.

A Fascinating Fact from History

With the advent of heavier helmets and plate gorgets, padding around the neck and shoulders became critically important. This was not just a matter of comfort but also protection from one's own armour. Without padding, the hard steel edges could cause serious injuries or abrasions, which could easily become infected in field conditions. This collar thus represented a vital step in increasing a warrior's comfort and safety on the battlefield.

What Is This Collar Perfect For?

This padded arming collar is ideal for:

  • Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA): Increases comfort and protection when wearing a fencing mask or under a gorget and cuirass.
  • Reenactment / Living History: An essential accessory for an authentic look and comfortable armour-wearing experience.
  • LARP: Perfect for characters like knights, soldiers, and anyone wearing heavier armour.
  • Theatre and Film: A functional and historically authentic-looking costume component.

How to Care for Your Product

To keep your collar in top condition, please follow these care instructions:

  • Cleaning: Spot-cleaning the textile parts with a damp cloth is preferred. Wipe the leather straps with a dry or slightly damp cloth only.
  • Washing: If a full wash is necessary, hand wash in cold water only. Protect the leather parts and buckle from excessive soaking.
  • Drying: Never tumble dry. Allow to air dry naturally, ideally laid flat. You can treat the leather parts with a leather conditioner after they are dry.

Dimensions and Sizing

The collar is a one-size-fits-most design, intended to suit the majority of warriors. The front buckle allows for adjustment to fit your neck.
