This helmet represents the pinnacle of open helmet evolution. While simple kettle hats were worn by infantry for centuries, this Burgundian variant elevates the design to an art form. The fluted (spirally ribbed) dome is not merely an aesthetic feature. This construction significantly increases the helmet's rigidity and, more importantly, helps to deflect weapon blows away from the head. The wide brim protects you from attacks from above—whether arrows, stones during a siege, or cavalry strikes—while not obstructing your vision or breathing, which you will appreciate during long marches and in the heat of battle.

Construction and Comfort

The helmet is welded from two halves of steel sheet with a thickness of approx. 1.6 mm (16 gauge), ensuring sufficient durability for most reenactment activities. The exterior is polished, while the interior is painted black to resist rust. Your comfort is ensured by an adjustable leather suspension liner, which absorbs impacts and allows you to customize the fit to your head. A secure fit is guaranteed by a leather chin strap with a period-appropriate solid brass buckle.

Historical Context

The Kettle Hat (French chapel de fer) was popular from the 12th to the 16th century. This specific variant is typical of the second half of the 15th century, when Burgundy and Flanders (modern-day Belgium and the Netherlands) set the tone in fashion and armoury. Owning such a helmet meant you were a professional, likely part of a well-paid unit that could afford high-quality and modern gear.

Maintenance and Care

The helmet is made of carbon steel, which can be subject to corrosion. To maintain its perfect appearance:

• Store it in a dry place.
• Wipe it dry after every use and apply a thin layer of oil (WD-40 or gun oil is suitable).
• Treat the leather liner and strap occasionally with leather conditioner to prevent cracking.

Safety Warning

This product is a replica of historical armour. Although it is made of quality steel with a thickness of 1.6 mm, it is a mass-produced product that may not meet the specific hardness requirements for full-contact combat (e.g., buhurt). In terms of standards, it falls into Class C according to the classification of fencing weapons (product without warranty against breakage/deformation during combat). The helmet is ideal for reenactment, stage combat, and LARP. 

Tip: Thanks to the large circumference (68 cm), an arming cap or chainmail coif fits comfortably under the helmet, significantly increasing both comfort and protection level.
