Blackened Round Rings 9 mm with Round Rivets, Mild Steel, 1 kg Pack

Classic Look and Solid Construction

Chainmail made from riveted round rings is the archetype of the medieval warrior's protection. This type of construction was extremely common due to its effectiveness and relative ease of manufacture. Our rings faithfully replicate this historical method. Flattening the wire ends creates a sufficient surface area for a strong rivet, resulting in a joint that is many times more durable than that of butted mail rings. The blackened finish not only looks great but also helps protect the carbon steel from rust, reducing maintenance requirements.

A Brief Guide to Riveting

Riveting rings is a skill that anyone can master with a little patience. Here’s a simplified procedure:

  1. Using pliers, weave an open ring through the mail weave.
  2. Overlap the flattened ends of the ring so that the holes align.
  3. Push the rivet through both holes.
  4. Place the ring and rivet on a solid surface (a small anvil, or for beginners, the face of a large hammer).
  5. With a smaller hammer or special riveting pliers, carefully peen the tail of the rivet to form a second head, which securely closes the link.

Care of Blackened Armour

Although the blackened surface is more resistant to rust, it is not entirely rust-proof. For maximum longevity, keep the armour dry. After use in a damp environment, dry it thoroughly and lightly treat it with a preservative oil. Be aware that with intensive use and friction, the blackened layer may wear off in exposed areas over time; this is normal and adds to the authentic, battle-worn look of the armour.
