Historical Shepherd's Sling, Braided Jute Rope
One of Mankind's Oldest and Most Effective Weapons
The history of the sling dates back to the Neolithic period, and it remained a prominent weapon for millennia. Greek and Roman armies feared specialised slingers, such as those from the Balearic Islands, whose volleys of stone or lead projectiles could penetrate armour and inflict devastating injuries. A well-aimed shot from a sling could reach speeds of up to 200 km/h (125 mph) and strike a target over 200 metres away. The story of David and Goliath is therefore not just a legend, but a demonstration of the real-world potential of this seemingly humble weapon.
How to Use the Sling (Safety First!)
Using a sling requires practice and, above all, extreme caution. This is a functional weapon, not a toy.
- Place the finger loop at the end of one cord over a finger (usually the middle or index finger).
- Firmly pinch the other end, which has a knot, between your thumb and forefinger.
- Place a projectile (e.g., a suitable smooth stone) into the widened pouch in the middle.
- Spin the sling and projectile over your head or at your side. A few rotations are enough to build up speed.
- At the correct moment in the arc, release the knotted end. The centrifugal force will launch the projectile forward.
IMPORTANT SAFETY WARNING: Always practice in a large, open, and safe area. Ensure that there are no people, animals, or property within range or in the direction of your throw. Use is entirely at your own risk and responsibility. Ammunition is not included.
Construction and Care
The sling is braided from six strands of jute rope, which ensures its strength. The central pouch is designed to securely hold a projectile during the wind-up. To ensure a long life, store the sling in a dry place and protect it from prolonged moisture and direct sunlight.
