Imagine this symbol on your tricorn hat, a wide leather belt, or the flap of your pirate satchel. This fitting isn't just an ornament; it's a statement. It is crafted from solid brass, ensuring durability and a satisfying weight. Thanks to the four integrated rivets on the back, its attachment to any leather good is reliable and permanent. Create your own custom design and become the terror of all landlubbers!

How to Attach the Fitting – A Riveting Guide

Attaching this decorative mount is a straightforward process you can do yourself with a bit of handiwork. It's the finishing touch that will personalize your gear.

What You'll Need:

  • A hammer (preferably with a ball-peen head)
  • Hole punch or punching pliers (e.g., our Leather Hole Punch Pliers No. 9602)
  • Brass washers (we recommend Brass Washers No. 10324)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Carefully mark the spots on your leather where the fitting's posts will go.
  2. Punch holes at the marked spots with a diameter matching the posts (approx. 3.5 mm).
  3. Push the posts of the fitting through the prepared holes in the leather.
  4. From the back, place one brass washer onto each post.
  5. Trim the posts so they protrude only about 2-3 mm past the washer.
  6. Place the fitting face-down on a soft surface (a piece of scrap leather, soft wood) to avoid damaging it.
  7. Carefully peen the ends of the posts with the hammer. It's better to use many light taps rather than heavy force. The posts will mushroom out, creating a permanent rivet that holds the fitting securely in place.

A Symbol That Tells a Story

The skull and crossbones, known as the Jolly Roger, is the most famous symbol of the Golden Age of Piracy. The goal of hoisting this flag was singular: to invoke such fear in the crew of a target ship that they would surrender without a fight. Every famous captain, like "Calico Jack" Rackham or Edward England, had their own version of the flag, but the skull remained the central motif, symbolizing death and violence.

Did You Know? More Than Just Pirates

In history, the skull symbol (German: Totenkopf) wasn't just used by pirates. Starting in the 18th century, it was adopted by elite military units, such as Prussian hussar regiments, as a symbol of bravery in the face of death and a commitment to fight without compromise. The symbol thus carries a legacy of fearlessness and contempt for danger.

Care and Technical Details

This fitting is made of solid brass with an antiqued patina. It requires no special maintenance. If you prefer a shinier look, you can carefully polish the patina away with a brass cleaning agent, but the antique finish is what gives the fitting its charm.
