Renaissance Basket-Hilted Sword Schiavona with Cat's Head Pommel, Stage Combat

Sword class B

Historical Origin and Use

The Schiavona is an iconic Renaissance basket-hilted sword that was widely used, particularly in Italy, throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. The weapon derived its name from the members of the Venetian Doge's personal guard (the so-called Schiavoni), who hailed from the ranks of Dalmatian Slavs and made this type of sword famous. During the 17th century, the sword gained immense popularity among armies trading with Italy and became the preferred weapon of mercenaries. Wealthy civilians often wore the Schiavona as a lavish fashion accessory and simultaneously as a highly effective defensive weapon, with historical originals frequently decorated with gilding or gemstones.

Construction and Safety for Stage Combat

This replica is primarily designed as a stable and well-balanced weapon for stage combat, classified under safety Class B. The blade is precisely forged from CSN 14260 spring steel and subsequently oil-quenched to a hardness of approximately 52-54 HRC. To prevent injuries during theatrical and historical duels, the blade features a blunt striking edge with a thickness of approx. 1.8 mm / 0.07 in. Despite this modification, we strongly urge you to adhere to all principles of safe fencing and use appropriate protective gear so as not to endanger yourself or your opponents.

Visual Details and Optional Scabbard

The dominant element of the sword is the complex protective basket, handcrafted from approx. 2.5 mm / 0.1 in thick sheet steel, which provides excellent hand coverage. The basket impresses with its sophisticated cage design featuring intricate cut-outs. The grip is covered in black leather for a firm hold and reinforced with regular wire ribbing. The hilt is crowned with a massive steel pommel in the shape of a so-called cat's head, the front of which is adorned with an elegant brass flower with a silver centre. A classic central fuller ensures weight reduction and excellent blade balance. For an additional charge, we can offer you a beautiful optional scabbard for the weapon, made from 3 mm / 0.12 in thick cowhide, which is luxuriously lined with red leather and decorated on the black exterior with red diamonds and brass fleur-de-lis. A massive buckle and a wide shoulder baldric are included with this scabbard. We highly recommend purchasing thick leather fencing gloves to accompany this sword for maximum finger protection.

Caring for Your Sword

Because the blade is made from high-carbon spring steel, it requires regular maintenance. After each training session, carefully wipe the blade and protective basket dry and apply a thin layer of high-quality gun oil to the metal parts to prevent surface rust. We recommend treating the leather grip and the optional scabbard with a special leather balm or wax from time to time.
