Penannular brooches

The history of the penannular brooches (also called Celtic brooches) goes back to the Bronze Age. In ancient Greece, the Romans and Byzantium the brooch had dual function: it was used as a garment buckle as well as jewelry. With the invention of buttons in the 14th century, the penannular brooch was transformed into a purely decorative object.
