Are you looking for a helmet that embodies the spirit of the Reconquista and the emerging Spanish Tercios? Its specific shape, resembling a pear with a small stalk on top, is not just an aesthetic quirk – it’s a design that excels at deflecting blows. Spanish Cabasset – 15th Century Helmet

This type of helmet evolved from kettle hats and became the dominant head protection on the Iberian Peninsula, spreading from there across Europe. The helmet bowl features a characteristic almond shape, which maximises strength while helping weapon blades glance off. It is topped with a small "stalk" or stem.

The construction is very robust. The bowl is made of 2 mm (14 gauge) steel, ensuring high durability. The brim, which protects the face from downward cuts, is made of 1.6 mm (16 gauge) steel and is firmly riveted to the bowl with a row of decorative rivets. Inside, you will find a glued-in linen inlay for comfortable wear and a historically accurate leather chin strap with a buckle.

History and Usage

The Cabasset was favoured for its light weight and the excellent visibility it offered. It was worn by light cavalry (Jinetes) but primarily by infantry. It is the ideal helmet for:

  • Re-enactment of the Italian Wars, the late stages of the Reconquista, or early Conquistadors.
  • Portraying marksmen, pikemen, and city guards in LARP.
  • Stage combat, where you will appreciate unrestricted breathing and peripheral vision.

Note: Although the bowl has a substantial thickness of 2 mm, due to the construction with a riveted brim, we recommend this helmet primarily for re-enactment and stage combat. For full-contact Buhurt, where extreme demands are placed on structural integrity, the riveted connection of the brim could be a weak point.

Size Chart

The measurements correspond to the head circumference. If you are between sizes, consider whether you will be wearing a thicker arming cap underneath.

M 60 – 61 cm (approx. 23.6 – 24 inches)
L 63 – 64 cm (approx. 24.8 – 25.2 inches)

Care Instructions

The helmet is made of carbon steel, which is naturally prone to rust. To keep it rust-free:

  • Keep it dry. Wipe it down with a cloth after every use.
  • Regularly preserve it with oil (WD-40, gun oil, 3-in-1 oil).
  • If surface rust appears, it can be removed with a fine abrasive pad and oil.

My Tip for You: To complete the look of a 15th-century Spanish infantryman, pair the Cabasset with a gambeson and a halberd or a sword with a bollock dagger.
