Hand-Sewn Early Medieval Leather Belt with Forged Buckle
Historical Context and Proper Belt Wearing
Forged rectangular buckles with simple yet effective decoration were a typical element of early medieval blacksmithing. During the 10th and 11th centuries, long belts were worn not merely to fasten clothing but formed an essential carrying platform for a sword, seax, pouch, or knife. After conventionally fastening it into the buckle, the belt was often tied into a so-called medieval knot, where the long free end was looped under the secured strap and left to hang down stylishly. To ensure the belt fits you perfectly, please state your waist circumference in the order notes (or the circumference where you will wear the belt over your costume). The holes will be punched custom to your size. If no measurement is provided, the first hole is punched for a 90 cm (35.4 inches) circumference by default.
Leather Care and Maintenance of the Forged Buckle
Natural leather requires occasional care to maintain its flexibility and prevent cracking. We recommend treating the surface of the belt with a high-quality leather balsam containing beeswax. Do not soak the belt, and never dry it near an open fire or on a radiator—rapid drying causes the leather to harden. Because the buckle is forged from mild steel (not stainless steel), it is advisable to wipe it lightly with oil occasionally to prevent surface rust, especially after a rainy event. For a complete period outfit, we recommend purchasing a practical leather pouch or a weapon suspension from our range to go with this belt.
