Tsuka-Ito: Blue Cotton Ribbon for Sword Handle Wrapping (Per Meter)

Important Purchase Information

Please pay attention to the sales unit. The price listed is for 1 metre of length. The ribbon is sold by the metre, not as a pre-cut pack. Therefore, if you add 1 item to your cart, you will receive 1 metre of ribbon.

How much ribbon do I need?
For a standard katana handle (approx. 26–29 cm), it is traditionally recommended to use about 4 to 5 metres of ribbon. A wakizashi requires less, while longer handles need more. We recommend always buying an extra metre as a reserve for knots.

Basics of Handle Wrapping (Tsuka-Maki)

Wrapping a handle is an art that requires patience and strong fingers. Here is a simplified procedure for the classic style:

  1. Preparation: Temporarily secure the Menuki ornaments to the handle (on the ray skin) with a rubber band so they don't move.
  2. Start: Guide the ribbon through the centre. Cross (twist) the left end and place it to the right.
  3. Continuation: Cross the right end and place it to the left. This creates a diamond shape. Then flip the handle and proceed in the same way on the other side.
  4. Repetition: Keep alternating sides, pulling tight, and shaping the diamonds. Gradually weave the Menuki into the wrap so they are firmly held by the ribbon.
  5. Finishing: The final knot (Uradome) is the most difficult part. We recommend looking for a detailed photo tutorial or video, as a verbal description is insufficient for this step.
