Robust Japanese Kunai Throwing Knife of Hardened Spring Steel
History and Origins of the Mysterious Shinobi Tool
Although the Kunai (Japanese 苦无) is perceived primarily as a deadly throwing weapon in today's pop culture, movies, and video games, its historical origin is much simpler. It is a Japanese tool that likely evolved from a masonry trowel or a small agricultural spade. This is precisely why it is firmly associated with the term Ninja (Shinobi) in martial arts. These warriors originally used it as an inconspicuous, everyday tool for digging holes in mud walls, prying open windows, or as a climbing anchor. Only in emergencies did the Kunai transform into an improvised striking, thrusting, or throwing weapon. The ring at the end of the handle was used to attach a rope, allowing the tool to be retrieved after a throw or used in creating climbing systems.
How to Use and Safety Warnings
This specific model is designed with high durability in mind. It can be successfully used as a throwing knife for target practice on wooden targets (such as soft wood blocks). For safety and practical reasons, the edge thickness is kept at approximately 1 millimeter (0.04 inches), which prevents it from chipping quickly upon impact. Although the edge is not primarily designed for cutting, the tip of the weapon is pointed. For this reason, the product is completely unsuitable for contact fencing or human-to-human combat. Exercise maximum caution when throwing, only throw at designated targets in a safe area, and always wear safety glasses to protect against possible wood splinters or a ricocheting weapon. Never throw the product at hard materials like stone or concrete to prevent its destruction.
Care for Spring Steel and Leather Sheath
The weapon is manufactured from high-quality hardened spring steel (CSN 14260 / 54SiCr6). This material is extremely tough, but it is a high-carbon steel that is subject to corrosion. After each use, it is necessary to clean the blade and ring of dirt and moisture and then treat them with a thin layer of gun oil. If you choose the variant with the optional leather sheath, we recommend regularly treating the leather with a special beeswax-based balm so it retains its flexibility and does not crack. Do not store the dagger in the leather sheath for long periods, as the leather can absorb ambient moisture and cause the steel to rust.
