Symbolism and Historical Significance

In Japanese culture, the crane (Tsuru) is a symbol of longevity, good fortune, and fidelity. Legend has it that the crane lives for a thousand years. On samurai swords, this motif was very common – the warrior used it to express a wish for long life and divine favour in battle. A notable feature of the kashira is the openings with gilded inserts (shitodome), which serve to thread the ito braid through, firmly fixing the cap to the wooden core of the handle.

Installation and Care Instructions

The fittings are placed onto the ends of the wooden handle. If the opening does not perfectly match your tsuka, you can carefully sand the wood with a fine file. Never strike the fittings directly with a hammer – you risk damaging the detailed crane relief or cracking the alloy.

Product Care:

  • Clean the surface only with a soft cloth to avoid wearing down the brass patina.
  • Do not clean the fittings with chemical metal polishes; they might remove the dark background that creates the contrast for the crane motif.
  • For long-term storage, apply a drop of Camellia oil to protect the metal from oxidation caused by humidity.

We recommend pairing this set with menuki featuring animal motifs and a tsuba with botanical elements to create a harmonious ensemble in the style of the classical Edo period.
