Historical Significance and Purpose
In traditional Japanese sword-making, menuki (literally "eyelets") originally served a practical purpose – they covered the pins (mekugi) that secured the blade into the hilt. Over time, however, they became important aesthetic and ergonomic elements. Properly placed under the wrap, menuki significantly improve control over the sword and fill the grip, which you will appreciate during cutting practice (tameshigiri) or forms (kata).
The horseman motif was immensely popular among the samurai. A horse was a symbol of high status and an indispensable partner in battle. By choosing these dark menuki, you carry a symbol of strength and the tradition of the cavalry on your weapon. The dark finish also follows the "wabi-sabi" aesthetic – finding beauty in aged and imperfect things.
Installation and Care Guide
Menuki are tucked under the tsuka-maki (hilt wrap). If you are currently wrapping your hilt, place them so they naturally fit into your palm. If you wish to replace them on a finished sword, we recommend proceeding carefully when loosening the wrap to avoid damaging it.
How to care for your menuki:
- Cleaning: Occasionally wipe them with a dry cloth. Avoid metal polishes, as they could remove the intentional patina.
- Protection: After practice, wipe the hilt to remove aggressive sweat from your palms.
- Dryness: Keep the hilt dry to prevent oxidation of the metal under the wrap.
What to avoid:
Never glue the menuki to the hilt with superglue. This could damage the rayskin (samegawa) underneath. Menuki should be held firmly by the tension and friction of the wrap alone.
Recommended Accessories
To create a perfect historical set, we recommend pairing these menuki with a dark cotton hilt wrap (e.g., black or dark brown) and a Tsuba (handguard) with a matching warrior theme.
