Anubis was originally depicted as a dog or a jackal lying on its belly, but later assumed this human form with a jackal's head. He was associated with the sacred object imiut, and his main task was embalming and weighing the hearts of the deceased. In the Roman era, he was even depicted in armour as the protector of Isis.
