Custom-Fitted Brown Leather Sheath for Double-Bitted Battle Axe

Historical Context and the Significance of Double Axes

Double-bitted axes (known since antiquity as the labrys) historically had more of a ceremonial significance or were used as lumberjack tools. However, in the modern realms of fantasy, LARP, and partially reenactment, they have found a solid place as fearsome weapons of war. Carrying such a broad and heavy weapon with an exposed blade was and remains extremely dangerous. Historically, blades were protected with oiled rags or custom-stitched leather covers to prevent the weapon from dulling and the bearer from being injured during troop movements. This sheath faithfully evokes traditional leatherworking techniques and is the ideal accessory for any warrior who cares about their gear.

Proper Use and Ordering Instructions

Fitting the sheath is intuitive but requires care. The cover is simply slipped from the top over both axe blades so that the central opening accommodates the eye of the axe and the haft. It is then pulled tight and tied using the integrated leather laces. For safety reasons, never transport a sharp axe without a properly secured cover. Merely tripping could result in a severe injury.

Important manufacturing note: This leather sheath is always made strictly to measure. The ideal scenario is to order it simultaneously with a new double-bitted axe. If the cover is to be made for an axe you already own, it is technically necessary to physically send the weapon to our workshop so that a precise pattern can be created.

How to Care for Natural Leather

Natural leather is a living material that requires regular care for a long lifespan. To prevent the sheath from hardening and cracking, keep it dry and clean. Upon returning from an event, remove mud and dust with a slightly damp cloth and let it air dry at room temperature. Never dry leather on a direct heat source (e.g., on a radiator or by an open fire), as this would cause irreversible damage. Treat the leather at least twice a year (or after heavy soaking) with a high-quality beeswax-based leather balm to restore its suppleness and water resistance.
