Wide Late Gothic Medieval Leather Belt with Solid Cast Buckle

Historical Context and Proper Wearing

Simple and sturdy belts with D-shaped buckles represented the absolute standard across all social classes during the Late Gothic period. For soldiers and mercenaries, a wide belt served as the main load-bearing element – sidearms, pouches, eating knives, and drinking horns were hung on it. The traditional hand-stitching of the buckle with strong linen thread guarantees extreme durability of the joint. The belt is classically worn fastened at the waist or slightly lowered on the hips. If you choose a longer strap variant, we recommend stylishly looping the excess end under and letting it hang vertically straight down, which corresponds to medieval customs of the time.

Natural Leather Care and Safety Principles

In order for the thick cowhide leather to remain supple and not crack for many years, it requires regular maintenance. Treat the belt thoroughly at least twice a year with a high-quality leather balm containing beeswax. If you get wet on your campaign, always dry the leather exclusively slowly at normal room temperature. Strictly avoid drying it directly on a hot radiator, with a hair dryer, or in dangerous proximity to an open fire – the material would irreversibly harden and be ruined. From a safety perspective, remember that despite its robustness, it is still a historical clothing accessory. Never use the belt as a securing element when abseiling, climbing in difficult terrain, or for pulling excessively heavy loads.
