Replacement Polymer Vanes for Carbon Arrows

Even the most expensive carbon shaft won't hit the bullseye if it lacks quality stabilisation. These replacement polymer vanes (often called fletchings) are an essential part of the kit for any archer who repairs or builds their own arrows. The set contains three pieces, approximately 10 cm (4 inches) long – two yellow and one red. This colour combination is not accidental; it serves for quick orientation of the arrow when nocking onto the string (the red vane usually serves as the so-called index or "cock" feather) and also makes it significantly easier to find arrows in grass or leaves. Thanks to the durable synthetic material, these vanes are immune to moisture and rain, which is a huge advantage over natural feathers. They are the ideal choice for target and 3D archery with carbon arrows. Further product information ...

Replacement Polymer Vanes for Carbon Arrows – 4 Inch Set

Installation and Usage

Vanes are glued onto the shaft, not clipped on. For correct installation, it is essential to use a fletching jig, which ensures precise spacing of the vanes around the circumference of the shaft (typically every 120 degrees). Thoroughly degrease the arrow shaft before gluing (e.g., with rubbing alcohol). The red vane is usually glued perpendicular to the nock groove so that it points away from the bow riser. These 10 cm / 4-inch long vanes provide the arrow with high stability, which you will appreciate especially when shooting at short to medium distances where the arrow needs to stabilize quickly. They are primarily intended for use with an arrow rest; shooting "off the shelf" or hand could cause them to deflect.

History: From Goose to Plastic

For thousands of years, fletching was made exclusively from bird feathers (goose, turkey, swan). Feathers have great flight properties but one major weakness: water. As soon as it rained in battle, the soaked feathers became heavy, matted, and the arrows lost accuracy. Modern times brought a revolution in the form of polymer vanes. These plastic replacements emerged in the mid-20th century and immediately gained popularity thanks to their shape retention, durability, and absolute independence from the weather. Today, they are the standard for most sporting disciplines.

Vane Care

Although plastic is durable, it is not indestructible. To keep your arrows accurate:

  • Shape Check: If a vane is crumpled after retrieval from the target butt, you can try to straighten it by heating it with a hair dryer (carefully, so it doesn't melt).
  • Storage: Store arrows in a quiver or case so that the vanes are not crushed against each other or the walls of the container.
  • Repair: If a vane tears, it must be stripped off, the shaft cleaned of glue residue, and a new one glued on. Never shoot with a torn or loose vane, as it drastically changes the flight path.

For easy repairs, I recommend purchasing high-quality fletching glue (cyanoacrylate) and a simple fletching jig.
