Spanish Morion – Conquistador Helmet | Marto Decorative Replica

Symbol of Spanish Dominance and Infantry

The Morion is an open helmet that evolved during the 16th century from the so-called Kettle Hat (Cabasset). Its most distinctive feature is the high comb (crest), which served in battle to deflect blows from above while reinforcing the helmet's structure. Also typical is the curved brim, which protects the face and neck without obstructing vision, which was crucial for arquebusiers and musketeers. Although the Morion is most commonly associated with Spanish conquistadors, it was popular throughout Europe and is still worn today by the Pontifical Swiss Guard.

Workmanship and Construction

This replica is made of iron sheet with a thickness of 0.8 mm (approx. 21 gauge). The surface is polished to a high mirror finish, giving the helmet a luxurious look. On the back of the comb, you will find a plume holder (tube) used for inserting decorative feathers, which was very fashionable at the time and served to distinguish ranks or units.

Important Notice on Wear and Use

It is essential to emphasize that this is strictly a decorative item. The 0.8 mm thickness is insufficient for any contact combat. The helmet would deform upon impact and offers no real protection. It is therefore not suitable for HEMA, reenactment combat, or stage fencing with metal weapons.

The helmet is supplied without an inner liner (suspension). Inside is just bare metal. If you plan to wear it (for example, to a costume party or as part of a theater costume), I strongly recommend wearing a thick padded arming cap underneath or gluing in a felt or foam liner. Without this, wearing it will be uncomfortable, and the helmet will be loose on your head.

Helmet Care

To keep this gem from Toledo looking beautiful for a long time, it requires basic maintenance:

  • Rust Protection: Since it is made of iron sheet, it is prone to corrosion. Regularly treat the helmet with preservation oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil).
  • Storage: Keep it in a dry environment. Moisture is the enemy of any armor.
  • Cleaning: Wipe off fingerprints and dust with a soft dry cloth to keep the surface shiny.
