Viking Sword Herleifr with Leather Scabbard | Petersen Type A
Austere Design of Old Masters
The sword features a short, thick crossguard and a massive pommel that balances the blade. The steel parts of the hilt are polished, creating a beautiful contrast with the dark hardwood grip. The blade, made of hand-forged carbon steel, features a wide fuller (blood groove) that reduces the weapon's weight to a manageable approx. 1.05 kg (2.3 lbs) without compromising its strength.
Included in the package is a simple yet functional black leather scabbard, which protects the blade and complements the weapon's overall look.
Historical Context: Petersen Type A
Norwegian archaeologist Jan Petersen created a typology of Viking swords that is still used today. Type A represents the very beginning of Viking sword development (approx. 2nd half of the 8th century to the mid-9th century). It is characterized by a lack of complex decoration and an emphasis on practicality. These swords were direct descendants of cavalry swords (Spatha) and were used during the first great raids, such as the attack on Lindisfarne.
