Muela Kukri Machete – Rosewood Handle – MoVa Steel

Unique Geometry for Maximum Performance

The characteristic feature of this knife is the curved blade with a center of gravity shifted significantly forward. This design acts like a lever, adding enormous kinetic energy to every swing. The blade is made of high-quality stainless Molybdenum-Vanadium (MoVa) steel, which is tough, flexible, and resists corrosion excellently. Unlike carbon steels, it does not require such meticulous care. The edge is ground to be very sharp and, thanks to the bellied shape, bites deeply into the material.

Ergonomics and Safety

The knife features a Full-Tang construction, meaning the steel runs through the entire handle, forming one massive unit with the blade. The scales are made of laminated wood (Rosewood/Pakkawood) with a beautiful reddish-brown grain and are attached to the steel with brass rivets. The handle is shaped so that it does not slip out of the hand during a swing – it flares towards the end. For maximum safety, we recommend always using the wrist lanyard, which you thread through the hole at the end of the handle (cord included).

You will receive the knife in a sturdy brown leather sheath, stitched with strong thread, which secures the knife against falling out with a snap-button strap.

A Bit of History

The Kukri is the traditional knife of the Nepalese highlanders and the feared Gurkha units who served in the British Army. Its history goes back hundreds of years, and the shape is likely inspired by ancient Greek Kopis swords. For the Gurkhas, the kukri is an extension of their arm – they use it for everything from slicing vegetables to felling trees to hand-to-hand combat. The Gurkha motto is: "It is better to die than to live like a coward."

Care and Maintenance

After work, clean the knife of wood residue and resin and dry it. You can occasionally treat the wooden handle and leather sheath with beeswax or leather conditioner. Maintain the edge with a sharpening stone or steel, but remember that a chopping tool does not require a razor-thin angle; durability is more important.

Safety Warning

Caution: The kukri has enormous inertia due to its weight and center of gravity. When chopping, ensure you have enough space around you and do not chop towards your own legs. Always use the safety lanyard on your wrist!
