Musashi Tsuba – Double Ring Steel Handguard

Design and Symbolism

The guard features the characteristic shape of two interconnected rings, a style associated with the Higo school and Musashi himself. This openwork design (sukashi) not only looks elegant and historically accurate thanks to its blackened finish, but also reduces the weight of the tsuba, contributing to better sword balance. The "double ring" symbolism represents stability, harmony, and infinity.

Installation and Usage

The tsuba is made of steel and is intended as a replacement part for both functional and decorative replicas of Japanese swords. Important Installation Note: Every sword has a tang (nakago) of different width and thickness. Therefore, it is quite common that you will need to gently adjust the central hole of the tsuba with a needle file so that it fits your sword precisely without wobbling. We also recommend using seppa washers to eliminate any play.

Tsuba Care

Since the tsuba is made of steel, it is prone to oxidation. To keep it looking beautiful:

  • Regularly treat it with sword oil (e.g., clove oil).
  • Wipe it with a dry cloth after contact with bare hands—sweat is aggressive and causes corrosion.
  • The tsuba is delivered in a wooden box, which serves as free protective packaging for transport.
