Medieval Women's Leather Shoes Camp Follower with Decorative Weaving

Historical Context and Shoe Construction

Low shoes with a deep cut-out over the instep were popular civilian footwear for women during the Late Middle Ages and Renaissance (roughly the 14th to 17th centuries). They were worn by townswomen, peasant women, and camp followers (sutlers) who accompanied military regiments. The deep cut-out allowed for easy slipping on, while the leather lace ensured the shoe did not slip off the foot during work or marching. An interesting detail of this model is the hand-woven leather trim around the heel, which gives the footwear a unique artisanal touch.

Material, Safety, and Colour Variants

The upper of the shoes is carefully crafted from high-quality cowhide. The crucial advantage for today's wearer is the durable rubber sole with an anti-slip tread. Unlike historically strict smooth leather soles, this modern feature will provide you with excellent traction and radically reduce the risk of slipping on wet grass, mud, or modern cobblestones. The shoe is thus much safer for active movement.

By default, the leather is supplied in black, dark brown, and light brown (natural) colours. If you desire a different colour shade, it is achieved by applying a special topcoat dye. Keep in mind, however, that this topcoat shares the natural properties of patent leathers – due to the stress and bending of the material, small cracks may form over time. For the purposes of occasional historical celebrations, however, this finish will serve to your full satisfaction.

Leather Care and Custom Adjustments

From the factory, the boots are treated with a beeswax balm that softens, impregnates, and slightly tints the leather to a darker shade. To ensure the material retains its flexibility and long lifespan, it is essential to regularly nourish the footwear. Waxes, leather oils, or standard shoe polish, which also easily covers scuffs acquired during a march, work excellently. Under no circumstances should you dry the footwear near a direct heat source (open fire, radiator), as the leather would irreversibly harden and crack.

If you wear orthotic insoles and choose the custom-made variant, it is absolutely necessary to send these insoles to us in advance. They will be precisely and permanently fitted directly into the footwear, ensuring the shoes provide optimal arch support.
