Women's Art Nouveau Leather Shoes with Straps and Buttons

Historical Context and Usage

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, women's fashion began to gradually relax. The shortening length of skirts designed for dancing or afternoon strolls revealed ladies' ankles and insteps, placing great emphasis on the aesthetics of footwear. Cut-out shoes with multiple straps were among the pinnacles of shoemaking art of the time. The curved heel, often referred to as a spool heel or Louis heel, visually reduced the size of the foot and added a specific grace to the walk. Historically, these shoes were worn primarily by middle and upper-class women during formal afternoon events, tea parties, and evening balls.

Material and Traditional Craftsmanship

This model is precisely crafted from high-quality cowhide leather, which ensures excellent breathability, suppleness, and durability. Over time, natural leather adapts perfectly to the anatomy of your foot, significantly increasing wearing comfort. Both the insole and the smooth outsole correspond to traditional methods of historical shoemaking. Fastening is achieved using a set of small buttons on the outer side of the instep, which requires a bit of dexterity, but rewards you with an absolutely uncompromising period look.

How to Properly Care for Your Leather Shoes

To ensure your shoes serve you as long as possible and maintain their representative appearance, regular care of the genuine leather is essential. The product is already treated from the factory with a high-quality leather balsam containing beeswax. For routine maintenance, we recommend following these steps:

  • After each wear, gently clean the shoes of dust and dirt with a dry or slightly dampened cloth.
  • Regularly apply leather balsam with beeswax or a specialised leather oil. These products soften and nourish the leather while protecting it from drying out and moisture. Please note that the leather may darken slightly after applying the balsam.
  • Any scuffs on the toe or heel can be easily concealed using a high-quality black shoe polish, which will also unify the colour tone.
  • Never dry the shoes in the immediate vicinity of direct heat sources such as radiators or fireplaces, as this could cause cracking and permanent damage to the leather. Use shoe trees to maintain the correct shape.

Safety and Practical Recommendations

These shoes are primarily intended as historical and costume footwear. The smooth leather sole and specifically narrowed heel require increased caution when walking on modern surfaces, such as polished floors, wet cobblestones, or slippery staircases. For safety reasons, never engage in dynamic physical activities, historical fencing, or running while wearing these shoes. Also, avoid prolonged soaking in deep mud or snow.

To complement these elegant Art Nouveau shoes, we highly recommend acquiring period cotton stockings and a practical button hook, which will make putting on this magnificent historical piece significantly easier for you.
