Bespoke Women's Baroque Fabric Shoes with Curved Heel and Bow

Historical Context and Craftsmanship

Footwear covered in luxurious textiles represented the absolute pinnacle of courtly fashion during the High Baroque and Rococo periods (throughout the 17th and 18th centuries). At the courts of Versailles or Vienna, it was unthinkable for a high-born lady to wear plain leather shoes with a gown made of heavy brocade or silk. Master shoemakers meticulously overlaid leather uppers with the exact same fabric used for the dress. The curved heel (Louis heel) compelled the wearer to maintain an upright, graceful posture and take small, elegant dancing steps. Given the immense cost of the materials, such shoes were worn almost exclusively indoors on polished floors, embodying absolute luxury.

Fabric Selection and Ordering Instructions

To enable us to cover your bespoke shoes, you will need to send approximately 1 linear metre (1.1 yards) of your chosen fabric (minimum roll width 90 cm / 35 in) to our workshop address. For a flawless aesthetic and excellent durability, we strongly advise selecting sturdy, densely woven materials such as high-quality brocade, damask, tapestry fabric, heavy wool, or dense cotton. Strictly avoid thin, delicate silks or lightweight satins, which are prone to rapid tearing and fraying. If you prefer to use metal buckles instead of ribbon bows, simply include the pair of buckles in your fabric parcel. Because we craft these shoes precisely to measure, please ensure you fill out our detailed foot measurement chart carefully after placing your order.

Practical Usage and Fit

These shoes are an ideal choice for Baroque and Rococo reenactment, historical dance, period balls, living history, and theatrical productions. The internal structure, crafted from sturdy cowhide, provides excellent support for the foot, while the external fabric overlay delivers a breathtaking aesthetic. The sole is secured using premium shoemaking adhesives to maintain clean, fine traditional lines. It is highly advisable to break in the sturdy structure gradually before your first long evening of dancing. For optimal period comfort, we recommend wearing fine white knitted or silk stockings inside them.

Care and Maintenance Instructions

Fabric-covered footwear requires exceptionally gentle care to preserve the vibrant colours and structural integrity of the textile. Never apply leather creams, polishes, or beeswax balms to the external fabric overlay. Gently remove dust and dry dirt from the fabric using a soft clothing brush. For minor localized stains, use only a barely damp cloth with a single drop of delicate upholstery or silk cleaner, taking care not to soak the fabric. The internal leather lining may be conditioned sparingly with a clear leather balm, ensuring no grease transfers to the external fabric.

Safety Warnings and Modern Use

Fabric shoes are intended primarily for indoor use. Strictly avoid walking in wet grass, mud, or on coarse gravel, which will instantly and irreversibly ruin the fabric covering. The curved heel requires a steady and focused stride on polished ballroom floors or flagstones to prevent twisting an ankle. Never force-dry damp shoes in the immediate vicinity of open flames, fireplaces, radiators, or in direct sunlight. Excessive heat warps the internal leather core, causing the fabric overlay to permanently crack, tear, or detach.

Recommended Accessories

To complete your breathtaking historical Baroque or Rococo silhouette, we recommend pairing these splendid custom shoes with a structured hoop petticoat (panniers), a laced corset, fine white stockings, and an elegant lace fan.
