Women’s Black Suede Baroque Shoes with Ornamental Buckle

Historical Context and Practical Application

During the 17th century, European footwear underwent a significant transformation. Flat Renaissance shoes were gradually replaced by heeled shoes featuring prominent fastenings across the instep. The high leather tongue and massive metal buckle served not only to secure the foot safely but also became clear indicators of social status. Today, these shoes are perfectly suited for historical re-enactment, theatre and film productions, LARP events, or period balls. The footwear is designed to meet high aesthetic standards while providing sufficient comfort for all-day wear.

Material and Craftsmanship

The upper part of the shoes is crafted from high-quality suede genuine cowhide (velour), which stands out with its matte, luxurious appearance and excellent suppleness. The interior is lined with smooth leather to prevent excessive friction and enhance comfort. Fastening is achieved via a functional leather strap that passes through a metal buckle featuring detailed historical relief work. The gracefully shaped heel optimally distributes body weight without putting unnecessary strain on the arch.

Upper Material 100% genuine cowhide leather (suede/velour)
Inner Lining Smooth genuine leather
Buckle Material Metal alloy with an antique silver finish
Colour Deep Black
Heel Height approx. 5.5 cm / 2.2 in
Historical Period 17th and 18th century (Early Baroque to Rococo, Golden Age of Piracy)

Available Sizes and Custom Tailoring

The shoes are supplied in standard European sizes (EU) as default. If you prefer footwear made precisely to your foot measurements, we offer a custom-made option. Simply select the appropriate variant when placing your order, and once completed, fill in our straightforward measurement chart with the exact dimensions of your feet.

Proper Care for Suede Footwear

Because the upper layer consists of brushed leather, caring for it requires a different approach than smooth leather. Never apply standard shoe polishes or greasy beeswax balms to the outer suede surface, as this would mat the fine fibres, permanently darken the leather, and destroy its velvety texture. Gently remove dust and dry dirt using a dedicated rubber or crepe suede brush. Before the first use, we highly recommend treating the footwear with a premium suede waterproofing spray to protect it from moisture and facilitate future cleaning. The smooth interior lining, on the other hand, can occasionally be treated with a mild leather conditioner.

Safety Guidelines and What to Avoid

These Baroque shoes are intended for walking on paved surfaces and within historical interiors. For safety reasons, do not engage in heavy contact fencing or strenuous combat activities while wearing them. The period cut lacks ankle support, which could lead to sprains during sudden, sharp movements. Protect the shoes from deep mud and road salt, and do not stand closely to open campfires to avoid scorching the natural suede.

Recommended Accessories for Your Costume

To achieve perfect historical authenticity, we recommend pairing these shoes with period-correct knitted over-the-knee stockings. They also coordinate beautifully with our voluminous Baroque skirts, period chemises, or elegant woollen cloaks. Please note that any other garments or accessories shown in the illustrative photographs are not included with the footwear.
