This traditional Scottish garment, whose central feature is the great kilt, finds its historical origins in the 16th and 17th centuries. During this period, it became an essential part of the wardrobe of the proud inhabitants of the Scottish Highlands. The kilt served not only as a skirt but as a massive, multifunctional piece of fabric. During dreary days, a warrior could wrap himself in it for protection against the rain, and at night it served as a warm blanket. The linen and cotton blend of the shirt ensures excellent breathability, the fustian vest gives a layered appearance, and the tartan kilt will keep you reliably warm.
How To Put On The Kilt
Putting on a traditional kilt requires a bit of practice. Follow these steps:
- The fabric must first be pleated into an accordion fold. Approximately one cubit of unpleated, flat fabric must remain at both ends.
- Next, a belt is slid under the fabric, tongue first, so it does not snag on the pleats.
- The belt should be positioned about 10 cm (4 inches) below the top edge, passing under the pleated central section.
- Then, lie down on the fabric so that the belt is exactly at waist level.
- Fold the right section of the flat fabric over yourself, followed by the left section, and finally tighten the belt securely.
- Now stand up and adjust the kilt into the perfect position.
- The remaining unpleated ends can be rolled up and tucked behind the belt at the back, or pinned diagonally across the body like a sash with a brooch.

Material Care and Safety
We highly recommend that the woollen kilt and beret are strictly dry-cleaned to prevent shrinking. The linen shirt and cotton vest can be hand washed or machine washed on a very gentle cycle at temperatures up to 30 °C (86 °F). Do not tumble dry any part of the costume. Exercise extreme caution when wearing near open flames, as natural materials can easily catch fire.
