Simple Gothic Women's Chemise with Stand-up Collar and Laced Cuffs

Historical Context and Usage

This type of loose shirt with puffed sleeves finds its historical precedent in the High and Late Gothic periods (14th to 15th centuries). The chemise (often called a smock, shift, or underdress) formed the absolute foundation of the medieval wardrobe across all social classes. For the common folk, it was often the primary working garment worn on its own on warmer days, or it was worn beneath coarse woollen dresses, overskirts, or even under men's hose (braies) if a woman was engaged in heavy physical labour. Today, you can perfectly utilize this chemise at historical markets, during re-enactment, at LARPs, or as a comfortable theatrical costume.

Materials and Craftsmanship

The chemise is tailored in a spacious cut with a prominent yoke on the chest and back, from which rich gathering falls. You can choose from two high-quality natural options: 100% cotton or a breathable blend containing 55% linen and 45% cotton. The linen variant additionally offers a slight cooling effect and a characteristic rustic texture. The low stand-up collar at the neck features a tie lacing. The sleeves are deliberately very loose and end in long, fitted cuffs, which are also tightened using practical lacing, ensuring the fabric does not get in the way during manual activities.

Care and Maintenance

To ensure this natural garment lasts a long time in perfect condition, we recommend washing it in the washing machine on a gentle cycle at a maximum temperature of 30 to 40 °C (86 to 104 °F). Never wring the chemise out with a rough twisting motion, and it is best to avoid the tumble dryer entirely to prevent unnecessary shrinkage of the linen or cotton fibres. Dry it laid flat or hung on a coat hanger in the shade. Ironing is ideally done while the fabric is still slightly damp, using steam on a medium setting.

Important Note and Recommended Accessories

Please be aware that the dark trousers and any jewellery shown in the photographs are not included in the delivery. You will receive only the Gothic chemise itself.

To achieve a believable medieval appearance of a common woman, we recommend complementing the chemise with a wide woollen or linen skirt, over which you can tie a linen apron. Do not forget a narrow leather belt with a pouch, a simple linen coif or cap to cover your hair, and basic leather turnshoes corresponding to 14th or 15th-century fashion.
