Loose Renaissance Musketeer Shirt with Lace Collar and Lacing

Historical Context and Usage

This type of garment is based on the fashion of the Renaissance and Early Baroque periods (approximately the 16th and 17th centuries). Wide shirts with rich gathering and prominent collars were the absolute standard in the wardrobes of the nobility, burghers, and especially elite soldiers like the French Musketeers. The shirt was usually worn as an underlayer tucked into breeches, over which a fitted doublet was worn. The wide lace collar was then pulled over the collar of the doublet, creating that iconic period look. Today, this shirt is perfectly suited for historical re-enactment, theatre, fencing displays, or LARP, where you can easily wear it on its own, casually gathered with a leather belt.

Materials and Craftsmanship

The shirt is tailored in an exceptionally loose and comfortable cut from high-quality 100% cotton. This natural material absorbs sweat excellently and is pleasant even against bare skin. The tops of the sleeves are deliberately gathered very richly so as not to restrict movement when handling a weapon. In the standard variant, the collar is trimmed with fine decorative lace (95% cotton, 5% nylon). Both the neckline and the wide cuffs on the sleeves are equipped with practical lacing, allowing you to wear the shirt casually open or securely fastened.

Care and Maintenance

The cotton material is relatively undemanding to maintain. We recommend washing the shirt in a washing machine on a gentle cycle at a temperature of 30 to 40 °C (86 to 104 °F). It is better not to dry the garment in a tumble dryer to avoid unnecessary shrinkage of the fabric and damage to the fine lace on the collar. Instead, dry it hanging freely on a hanger. You can iron the shirt on a medium setting, but be very careful with the lace; ideally, iron it through a damp pressing cloth or on the reverse side.

Please be aware that the black trousers and any other accessories shown in the photographs are not included in the delivery. You will receive only the Musketeer shirt itself.

To achieve a perfect Musketeer appearance, we recommend complementing the shirt with a wide leather belt and a rapier frog, a period doublet, leather riding gloves, and, of course, a wide-brimmed hat with ostrich feathers.
