Historical Legacy and Use of the Garment

During the High Middle Ages, particularly in the 12th to 14th centuries at the time of the Crusades, members of knightly orders commonly wore similar long cowls and cloaks over their armour as well as civilian clothing. Even though this model is commercially known as a long Templar cowl, the Templars historically wore a red cross on a light or dark background. Dark garments with a white cross belonged to the Hospitallers. Furthermore, the hood features an elongated tail at the back called a liripipe, which was a very popular and widespread fashion element throughout Europe at that time. You can thus perfectly use this garment for historical reenactment, LARP, and historical festivals.

Material and Its Advantages

The cowl is made entirely of duvetyne, which is high-quality 100% cotton. This material is densely woven and lightly brushed on the face side, so it feels and looks pleasantly like luxurious suede or velvet. The primary advantage of this purely natural material is its breathability, excellent sweat absorption, and at the same time, a high fabric weight that has a superb ability to protect you from cold wind and adverse weather.

Maintenance and Safety Warnings

For your garment to last a long time in perfect condition and for the colours to remain rich, it is important to follow the correct cleaning and maintenance instructions. We recommend washing the cowl exclusively inside out in a washing machine on a gentle cycle at a maximum temperature of 30 °C / 86 °F. Do not use aggressive bleaches and do not dry the garment in a tumble dryer, so the cotton duvetyne does not shrink. Always iron only on the reverse side on a medium heat setting. Since the cowl is made of 100% cotton without a chemical flame-retardant finish, exercise extreme caution near an open fire. The product also does not serve as protective armour for contact fencing; it only protects against the elements.

A solid leather belt with a brass buckle, typical of the 13th century, will suit this cowl perfectly. Simple linen trousers and period leather boots, which you can find in our range, are also highly suitable. Please note that the accessories shown or any undergarments are not included in the delivery.

The cowl is available as standard in regular sizes according to the relevant size chart. However, it will be made exactly to your measurements completely free of charge. In such a case, simply fill in the measurement chart carefully after completing your order. Upon request, this garment will also be made for you in other colours according to our fabric swatch books.
