Construction and Practical Use
The product consists of a solid, leather-covered and braided handle finished with two decorative knots (known as Turk's heads), which prevent the hand from slipping. At the end of the handle, there is a practical leather wrist loop, allowing you to maintain full control over the tool even during vigorous movements. The striking part is formed by a generous bundle of flat leather fringes. Before the first use, we recommend gently running your fingers through the fringes to aerate the leather and allow it to regain its natural dynamics. Historical Context and Interesting Facts
The scourge, Latin flagellum, has a deeply rooted tradition in European history. It became most prominently etched into human memory during the 14th century during the great plague epidemics. At that time, processions of flagellants swept across Europe, believing that public penance and self-flogging would appease divine wrath and halt the "Black Death." Interestingly, while military whips were often equipped with knots or metal hooks to cause deep wounds, these religious and ritual scourges focused more on surface stimulation and inducing a trance-like state. In monastic environments, the "discipline" (as the scourge was also called) was used to suppress carnal temptations.
