Traditional Hand-Forged Bow Jew's Harp for Medieval Reenactment
History and Usage of the Jew's Harp
The Jew's harp is among the oldest musical instruments, with traces found in many cultures worldwide, especially in European and Asian folk music. This specific model belongs to the so-called bow Jew's harps. Characteristic of this variant is the metal tongue (lamella) protruding beyond the frame itself. Historically, the Jew's harp served not only for entertainment during long evenings but also for ritual purposes. Playing it involves placing the instrument against slightly parted lips or teeth, turning your oral cavity into a natural resonator. By plucking the steel tongue and altering the shape of your mouth, you create fascinating overtone melodies.
How to Play and Care for Your Instrument
Press the frame of the instrument gently but firmly against your front teeth. Be careful, the instrument must not be held in a way that allows the vibrating tongue to strike your teeth. Then lightly pluck the end of the tongue with your index finger. For safety reasons, never forcefully pluck the tongue towards your face to prevent injury to your lips or teeth; always pluck outwards or very gently and in a controlled manner towards yourself, minding the vibration path.
Because the instrument is made of traditionally processed mild steel, it requires basic maintenance. Wipe the instrument completely dry after every playing session to prevent moisture from your breath from causing damage. Occasional light oiling of the surface with food-grade oil will protect the instrument from surface rust and keep it in perfect condition. Do not wash the instrument in water or leave it in a damp environment.
