Prague Groschen of Wenceslas IV (1378-1419), Replica of the Famous Bohemian Coin (Tin,25,6 mm)

A Symbol of Royal Power and Wealth

The design of the Prague Groschen, introduced by Wenceslas II in 1300, remained almost unchanged throughout its existence and became synonymous with the quality and stability of the Kingdom of Bohemia.

  • Obverse (The Crown and the King): The front is dominated by the Crown of Saint Wenceslas, the symbol of the Bohemian state. It is surrounded by two inscriptions. The inner ring bears the ruler's name (e.g., WENCEZLAVS QVARTVS), and the outer one his title: DEI GRATIA REX BOEMIE, which translates to "By the Grace of God, King of Bohemia."
  • Reverse (The Bohemian Lion and the Coin's Name): The back is commanded by the majestic two-tailed Bohemian lion rampant, a symbol of strength and courage. The outer inscription proudly proclaims GROSSI PRAGENSES, meaning "Prague Groschen." This inscription was a guarantee of the coin's origin and quality.

Wenceslas IV and the Twilight of a Golden Age

The reign of Wenceslas IV (1378-1419) was a complex and contradictory period. Although he was the son of one of the greatest Bohemian monarchs, Charles IV, his rule was marked by constant conflicts with the high nobility and his own brother Sigismund, the Papal Schism, and, above all, the rise of the reform movement of Jan Hus. The country was descending into crisis, which was also reflected in the gradual decline in the quality of the Prague Groschen. A coin from this era is thus a fascinating witness to the "calm before the storm"—the final years of a once-powerful and stable kingdom before it was engulfed in the flames of the Hussite Revolution, which broke out shortly after Wenceslas's death.

Authentic Replica from Mincovna Dukát

This artistic replica was struck in 2012 at the Mincovna Dukát mint. Its author, medallist Vojtěch Dařbujan, created the dies by hand using classic medieval techniques. This is not a cast but a true striking into tin, which gives the replica an authentic character and appearance. Each piece is an original due to the manual labour involved.
