Třebíč Denarius of Vladislaus Henry (1197-1222), Replica of a Moravian Coin (Tin,19 mm)

The Unique Art of Moravian Mint Masters

The design of this denarius stands out from the common European coinage of its time. It testifies to the great skill and artistic ingenuity of the mint masters at the court of Vladislaus Henry.

  • Obverse (Moravian Eagle in a Star): The front side depicts a stylized Moravian eagle, the heraldic symbol of Moravia. However, it is unconventionally placed inside a six-pointed star (hexagram). At this time, the hexagram was not an exclusively Jewish symbol and appeared in art as a decorative or mystical element.
  • Reverse (Lions under a Palm Tree): The back side is even more exotic. Here we see two lions walking towards each other, separated by the trunk of a palm tree. This motif is entirely unusual for Central Europe and may reflect influences from the Crusades or symbolize peace and justice under the rule of a strong sovereign (the lions).

Vladislaus Henry, Margrave of Moravia

Vladislaus Henry (1160/65–1222), of the Přemyslid dynasty, was the younger brother of the Bohemian King Ottokar I. After a brief period of ruling as the Duke of Bohemia himself, he became the Margrave of Moravia in 1197, a title he held until his death. His 25-year reign brought a period of peace, stability, and economic development to Moravia. It was this consolidated power that allowed him to mint his own high-quality and artistically imaginative coins, of which this denarius is a beautiful example.

The authenticity of this replica is underscored by the fact that its model was discovered during archaeological research while renovating Charles Square in Třebíč. In numismatic literature, this coin type is described in the catalogue of František Cach under number 886.

A Faithful Replica from Mincovna Dukát

This replica was struck in 2022 at the Czech Mincovna Dukát mint. Its author, medallist Vojtěch Dařbujan, created the dies by hand using classic medieval techniques to emulate the historical original as faithfully as possible. Each coin is thus a unique piece of craftsmanship.
