On its obverse, you will find the symbol of the Kingdom of Bohemia – the two-tailed lion. The reverse side is characteristically smooth, a common practice at the time to save costs and speed up the minting of small-denomination coins. Hussite Peníz with Czech Lion (15th Century), One-Sided Coin (Tin,15,6 mm)

Currency from the Time of the Chalice and the Pavise

The design of this coin is simple, functional, and entirely of its time. Every element has its justification.

  • Obverse (The Bohemian Lion): The front side bears the dominant and timeless symbol of the Czech state – the two-tailed lion rampant. The heraldic figure is surrounded by three concentric circles that define the coin's field. Even in times of the greatest conflict, the coin proudly proclaimed its allegiance to the Kingdom of Bohemia.
  • Reverse (Smooth Side): The reverse side is completely smooth. This is not a mistake but a deliberate feature. These small coins, known as peníze (singular: peníz), were struck on one side only. This allowed mints, such as the one in Kutná Hora, to produce the large quantities of currency needed for daily trade and paying soldiers' wages.

A Small Coin in a Tumultuous Time

This type of peníz was minted in the second half of the 15th century, a period following the end of the main Hussite Wars but still marked by their consequences. The Hussite Revolution (c. 1419–1434) was an era of profound religious, social, and military upheaval in the heart of Europe. It was a time when the fate of the country was decided not only at the royal court but also in war camps and on diets.

The original coins of this type were minted in Kutná Hora from low-grade silver (approx. 400/1000 fineness). Their value was equivalent to one-seventh of a Prague groschen, and they served as the basic cash for everyday transactions. It was the coin with which you could buy bread, pay for beer in a tavern, or receive as part of your wages before a battle.

A Faithful Replica from Mincovna Dukát

This replica was struck in 2012 at the Mincovna Dukát mint under the direction of the die's author, Vojtěch Dařbujan. Classical medieval techniques were used for its production, including the hand-engraving of the dies. As a result, the coin retains an authentic character, and each piece is an original.
