Viking Serpent Pendant 'Jörmungandr' in Bronze with Leather Cord

The Amulet's Design and Craftsmanship

The pendant features a circular, openwork design measuring 3.5 × 3 cm. The central motif is an intricate knotwork of stylised serpent bodies, a tribute to the celebrated animal styles of Viking art. An antique finish (patina) has been applied to make every detail of the complex pattern stand out beautifully. The amulet is suspended from a 2 mm thick black leather cord, which can be easily adjusted in length using its sliding knots.

How to Wear and Adjust Your Pendant

The necklace length is fully adjustable, ranging from 23 cm to 47 cm (9 to 18 inches). Thanks to a clever system of two sliding knots, you can tailor it to your exact preference – wear it as a tight choker or let it hang lower on your chest. Simply hold the knots and pull them apart to shorten the cord or pull the cords to move the knots closer together to lengthen it.

Symbolism in Metal: Jörmungandr, the World Serpent

This is no ordinary piece of jewellery. It depicts Jörmungandr, also known as the Midgard Serpent. In Norse mythology, this offspring of the god Loki is so colossal that he encircles the entire world of mortals (Midgard), biting his own tail. The circular form of the pendant therefore symbolises not only Jörmungandr himself but also the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth—a core concept in the Viking worldview. For a Viking, an amulet like this was a powerful protective charm and a clear declaration of their culture and beliefs.

A Piece of History: Cast from Fire and Wax

Each pendant is individually made using the lost-wax casting process, a method that dates back thousands of years. An artisan first carves the intricate design in wax, encases it in a clay mould, and then heats it to melt the wax away. Molten bronze is then poured into the resulting cavity. Once cooled, the mould is broken, revealing the detailed metal casting within. This historic process ensures that each piece is slightly different and truly one of a kind.

Caring for Your Amulet

To maintain your pendant's beauty, follow these simple guidelines:

  • Wipe with a soft, dry cloth after wearing.
  • Store in a dry place, away from prolonged exposure to moisture.
  • Avoid contact with acids or harsh chemicals.
  • If desired, you can gently buff the pendant with a non-abrasive polishing cloth to enhance its warm sheen.
