Chainmail Coif, Aluminium and Rubber, 10 mm Butted Rings

A Modern Take on a Classic Armour

This chain mail armour is crafted from butted aluminium rings with a 10 mm inner diameter and a wire thickness of approx. 1.6 mm (14 gauge). The main advantage of aluminium is its low weight, which is a fraction of its steel alternative, as well as its resistance to corrosion. Strategically interwoven rubber rings provide elasticity to the entire structure. This makes the coif fit perfectly and easy to put on and take off without assistance. The design, featuring full head coverage and a flared mantle over the shoulders, corresponds to classic European examples from the 12th to 14th centuries.

Historical Context

The chainmail coif was the primary and most widespread form of protection for the head, neck, and shoulders in the High Middle Ages. It was worn by knights, men-at-arms, and even archers, often as the sole head protection or in combination with a helmet. For maximum comfort and enhanced protection, a padded arming cap was always worn underneath to absorb impact and prevent chafing.

Intended Use and Safety Notice

Thanks to its low weight and flexibility, this coif is perfect for LARP, cosplay, theatre, film, or as part of a historical costume for festivals. However, it is important to understand that this is a decorative replica. This chainmail armour is NOT suitable for full-contact combat sports such as HMB, buhurt, or the Battle of the Nations. The butted aluminium rings are not designed to withstand the heavy impact of steel weapons.

How to Care for Your Coif

Unlike steel, aluminium does not rust, but the coif still requires care, especially because of the rubber rings. Store it in a dry place. A soft cloth or a gentle brush is sufficient for cleaning. Do not expose the coif to high temperatures or chemical solvents, as this could damage the rubber components and cause them to deteriorate.
