German Langmesser (Grosse Messer) for LARP / PU Foam Messer
Appearance and Construction
This Langmesser differs from classic swords primarily in its unique knife-handle construction. Two wooden scales are firmly riveted to the massive full tang, giving the weapon exceptional durability and character. The handle is finished with a slightly curved pommel that prevents the weapon from slipping out of hand during a powerful cut. The hilt is protected by a simple, straight crossguard. The mighty, single-edged blade widens slightly and is designed for devastating cutting attacks.
A Master's Choice – Customise Your Weapon
Build a weapon that perfectly suits your fighting style, thanks to a unique choice of cores:
- Round 10mm Core: A lighter and more flexible option, ideal for fast and dynamic fencing.
- Rectangular 6x15mm Core: A light but stiffer core for those who prefer a firmer blade without compromising on speed.
- Rectangular 8x16mm Core: The heaviest and stiffest option, giving the weapon authority and a great feel in hand, ideal for forceful blade binding.
Further Customisation Options:
- Blade Length: 70 or 80 cm.
- Wooden Grip Colour: Black / Brown.
- Hilt Colour (Guard and Pommel): Steel / Graphite / Brass.
- Optional Accessories: Without scabbard / Including scabbard Type I, II, or III (see product gallery).
Use in Combat: The Art of the Long Knife
The Langmesser is the workhorse of the battlefield. Its construction and balance are optimized for incredibly powerful cuts. It is a weapon that will not shy away from any opponent, and its robustness makes it a reliable companion. It is perfect for characters like Landsknechts, city guards, mercenaries, or any practitioners of the German school of fencing.
How to Care For Your Weapon
Even a workhorse deserves care to ensure its longevity.
- The blade is meant for cutting foam foes, not rocks, trees, or walls.
- Do not leave it compressed for long periods during storage.
- Minor damage to the foam can be easily repaired with a flexible superglue (we recommend Loctite Super Glue Power Flex Gel).
- However, remember that a broken core is a wound that cannot be healed.
A Piece of History in Your Hands
The Grosse Messer ("great knife") was a phenomenon in German-speaking lands during the 15th and 16th centuries. Its "knife" construction legally distinguished it in some cities and regions from swords, the carrying of which was a privilege of the nobility. This made it a favourite weapon of wealthy burghers and guilds. Its popularity and sophistication are evidenced by the fact that numerous fencing treatises were dedicated to it, the most famous being by Master Johannes Lecküchner from 1482. You are holding not just a weapon, but a piece of European civilian and martial culture.
Safety First
Even though this is a safe foam weapon, always use it responsibly. Thanks to its solid construction and different core types, it can deliver a palpable hit. Never aim for the head, neck, or other sensitive areas. Use appropriate protective gear.
