The original coins, of which these are faithful replicas, were minted in the Phoenician city of Tyre from 125 BC to 66 AD. Due to their high purity, they were the only currency accepted for the temple tax in Jerusalem. For this very reason, they were the standard currency in Judea during the time of Jesus.

A Closer Look at the Coin's Design

• Obverse (Front): This side is dominated by an eagle standing on a ship's prow, surrounded by the Greek inscription ΤΥΡΟΥ ΙΕΡΑΣ ΚΑΙ ΑΣΥΛΟΥ, which translates to "Of Tyre, the Holy and Inviolable." The symbolism refers to the naval power and autonomy of this major port city.
• Reverse (Back): This side features a portrait of Tyre's principal deity, Melqart, who was identified by the Greeks with Heracles. His head is adorned with a laurel wreath, a symbol of victory and divine honour. This side, in particular, stands out for its exceptionally high and intricate relief.
