Set of 30 Pieces of Silver – Judas Coin Replica (Shekel of Tyre) (Pewter, 24,5 mm)

A Deep Dive into History with Judas's Silver

The Coin That Changed the World

The thirty pieces of silver represent a symbolic payment whose story is known across the globe. It was for this exact sum that Judas betrayed Jesus, delivering him into the hands of the chief priests. Although it was a common currency of the time, this act forever stamped it with the mark of treachery, making it one of the most famous motifs in history. Holding this set, you can almost feel the weight of that historical moment.

Origin and Appearance of the Tyrian Shekel

The original coins, of which these are faithful replicas, were minted in the Phoenician city of Tyre from 125 BC to 66 AD. Due to their high purity, they were the only currency accepted for the temple tax in Jerusalem. For this very reason, they were the standard currency in Judea during the time of Jesus.

A Closer Look at the Coin's Design

  • Obverse (Front): This side is dominated by an eagle standing on a ship's prow, surrounded by the Greek inscription ΤΥΡΟΥ ΙΕΡΑΣ ΚΑΙ ΑΣΥΛΟΥ, which translates to "Of Tyre, the Holy and Inviolable." The symbolism refers to the naval power and autonomy of this major port city.
  • Reverse (Back): This side features a portrait of Tyre's principal deity, Melqart, who was identified by the Greeks with Heracles. His head is adorned with a laurel wreath, a symbol of victory and divine honour. This side, in particular, stands out for its exceptionally high and intricate relief.

Each coin is hand-struck, giving it a unique character with slight irregularities on the edge, just like the historical originals. The design for this replica is based on an original by the skilled medallist Vojtěch Dařbujan.

More Than a Collectible: A Prop for Every Story

This set is not just a static item for a display case. It serves wonderfully as in-game currency for Live Action Role Playing (LARP), as an authentic prop for theatrical performances and film productions, or as a historical costume accessory for re-enactments. Thanks to the high-quality craftsmanship and tangible weight, the coins feel very convincing in your hand. They are also a fantastic way to bring history or religious studies to life.

How to Care for Your Coins and Preserve Their Beauty

To keep your coins preserving their shine and detail for as long as possible, we recommend you follow a few simple guidelines:

  • Storage: Keep them in a dry place, ideally in a cloth pouch or a jewellery box, to prevent them from scratching each other.
  • Cleaning: If they get dirty, simply wipe them with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid water and any chemical cleaners.
  • Restoring Shine: Pewter can develop a patina over time. If you prefer the original shine, you can very gently polish the coins with a cloth and a small amount of polishing paste suitable for metals like pewter or silver. Always test on a small, inconspicuous area first.

Under no circumstances should you use the coins as legal tender. Protect them from harsh chemicals, rough handling, or high drops that could damage their detailed relief.
