Tyrian Shekel, The "30 Pieces of Silver" – Ancient Coin Replica (Food-safe Pewter, 24,5 mm)

The Historical Background of the Coin

The original shekels were minted in the Phoenician city of Tyre (in modern-day Lebanon) from 125 BC until 66 AD. Despite depicting a pagan god, they were the only coins approved by the Jewish authorities for paying the annual Temple Tax, due to their high and consistent silver purity. This made them the most common high-value currency in the region during the era of early Christianity.

Obverse (Front)

The obverse of the coin is dominated by an eagle standing on the prow of a Phoenician ship, a symbol of Tyre's maritime power. It is surrounded by the Greek inscription "ΤΥΡΟΥ ΙΕΡΑΣ ΚΑΙ ΑΣΥΛΟΥ," which translates to "Of Tyre the Holy and Inviolable." You can also see a club, the attribute of the god Melqart.

Reverse (Back)

The reverse side features a bust of the chief deity of Tyre, Melqart, who was identified by the Greeks with Heracles. The god's head, adorned with a laurel wreath, is shown in profile, and the entire scene is enclosed by a fine beaded border.

Caring for Your Coin

To ensure your coin maintains its lustre and detail for as long as possible, follow a few simple guidelines. Store it in a dry place and avoid exposure to moisture or harsh chemicals. To restore its original shine, you can occasionally polish it gently with a soft, dry cloth. Being made of pewter, it will quickly regain its bright, like-new appearance.

What to Avoid: Do not use abrasive cleaners, wire brushes, or harsh chemical agents, as they could permanently damage the detailed relief. As this is a collector's item made of pewter, it is not intended as a toy for small children.
