Prague Groschen Replica Coins – Set of 10 or 100 Small Groschen (Aluminium, 20,6 mm)
The Famous Prague Groschen in a New Guise
This coin is an artistic replica inspired by the most famous Bohemian coin of all time—the Prague Groschen. Specifically, it depicts its central part, which has resulted in this smaller "Small Groschen". The original Prague Groschen, first minted under Wenceslas II and made famous during the reign of Charles IV, was one of the hardest and most respected currencies in 14th-century Europe. Its stability and high silver content were the foundation of the Bohemian kings' economic power.
Obverse and Reverse of the Coin
The Obverse (front) side bears the dominant symbol of Bohemian statehood—the St. Wenceslas Crown, which is intricately detailed and supplemented by an outer inscription.
The Reverse (back) side displays the other key heraldic symbol—the Bohemian two-tailed lion rampant, representing the strength and pride of the kingdom.
Who Was Charles IV?
Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor, is regarded as the Father of the Fatherland and one of the most significant monarchs in European history. His reign from 1346–1378 is known as the Golden Age of Bohemia. Charles IV was not only a wise politician but also a visionary builder and founder. In 1348, he founded the first university in Central Europe in Prague (today's Charles University), commissioned the construction of the Charles Bridge, and established the Prague New Town, making Prague the political and cultural capital of the Empire. The strong and stable currency represented by the Prague Groschen was the economic backbone of all his magnificent projects.
