The cut of this dress is heavily inspired by the fashion of the 15th and 16th centuries, particularly the style of German and Swiss mercenaries – the Landsknechts – and the Italian Renaissance. They are the ones who made "slashing" famous. This custom is said to have originated when soldiers repaired their torn clothing after battle with patches from the luxurious fabrics of captured banners. Necessity quickly became a virtue and an extravagant fashion statement that showcased the wearer's wealth and daring by revealing the contrasting and expensive underlayers. Please note: The chest measurements for the overdress are given at their minimum, fully laced size; the circumference is highly adjustable thanks to the lacing. Conversely, the measurements for the chemise are maximums, as the cut is loose and gathered.

Care Instructions

To keep your set serving you in its full glory for as long as possible, we recommend the following care:

• Before Washing: Completely loosen or ideally remove all lacing cords.
• Washing: Hand wash in cold water or machine wash on a delicate cycle (max 40°C / 104°F), preferably inside-out and in a laundry bag. Wash with similar colours.
• Drying: Do not tumble dry! Natural fibres could shrink. Hang to dry on a hanger in the shade.
• Ironing: Iron inside-out on a low setting (cotton setting).
