This pendant is a perfect example of how the Vikings combined artistry with everyday practicality. The upper part is richly decorated with knotwork motifs, symbolizing eternity and interconnectedness, while the lower part is shaped into a functional scoop. Archaeological finds show that Vikings took more care of their personal appearance than is commonly believed. Grave sites of both men and women often contain complete sets of toiletries, which included combs, tweezers, and ear scoops (known as øreske in Old Norse). These kits were typically worn hanging from a ring attached to their clothing. This pendant is therefore not only a beautiful piece of jewellery but also a window into the personal lives and customs of people who lived over a thousand years ago.
