Black Silk Ito Ribbon for Samurai Sword Handle Wrapping
Usage and Ordering Instructions
This ribbon is sold by the metre so you do not have to buy unnecessary excess material. If you need 5 metres (approx. 16.4 feet) for your wrap, simply add 5 pieces of this product to your cart, and we will deliver the ribbon in one continuous piece of the requested length. A complete wrap for a standard katana handle (tsuka) typically requires about 4 to 5 metres (13 to 16.4 feet) of ribbon, depending on the length of the handle and the complexity of the knotting. The ribbon is pulled tightly and folded over a ray skin (samegawa) foundation, securing the ornaments (menuki) placed underneath. The work requires patience and practice, but the result is absolutely worth it!
The Historical Significance of Silk in Japan
In the history of Japanese swordsmithing, silk played an irreplaceable role. Samurai knew that in battle, a firm grip was a matter of life and death. Natural silk, unlike cotton, does not soak up sweat to the point of becoming slippery, nor does it stretch or loosen when wet. Furthermore, the black colour (kuro in Japanese) was among the most popular, as it symbolised seriousness, dignity, and formality. It was the standard for swords worn at the imperial court and remains the most common choice for masters of traditional martial arts today.

Care for Natural Silk
Silk is a noble natural material that must be treated with respect. If you use the ribbon as a handle wrap on a sword you train with regularly, it will naturally acquire a patina and absorb sweat from your palms over time. Always allow the handle to dry naturally in a well-ventilated area. Protect the ribbon from contact with Velcro, sharp edges, and abrasive surfaces that could pull out the fine threads. Never clean it with harsh chemicals; if heavily soiled, simply wiping the surface gently with a damp cloth is sufficient.
