Butted Mail Coif „Vanguard“, 4-in-1 Pattern, Mild Steel

Construction and Design

The coif is constructed from mild steel wire with a gauge of 16 (approx. 1.3 mm). It utilizes the traditional "International" 4-in-1 pattern, where four links are woven through a fifth central link. As this is butted mail, the ends of the rings are simply pressed together. The coif is designed to cover the head, neck, and shoulders, draping naturally to provide a mantle of protection. It is sized to accommodate a padded arming cap underneath comfortably.

History and Usage

From the Celts of 300 BC to 18th-century Asia, mail was a prized possession. The word likely comes from the Latin macula, meaning net. Historically, coifs were worn either alone or beneath helmets like the Great Helm or Bascinet to protect the gaps in plate armor. This authentic replica is suitable for a wide variety of periods, from the Viking Age through the Medieval era to the early Renaissance.

Care Instructions

Because this item is made of mild steel, it is prone to rust if neglected. Always ensure the coif is dry after use. We recommend keeping the mail oiled at all times (using gun oil or WD-40) when stored to maintain its condition.

Safety Warning

Please be aware that this coif is made of butted rings. Under heavy impact, the rings will spread open. This product is NOT suitable for full-contact combat sports like Buhurt or SCA heavy combat. For safety, hygiene, and comfort, we strongly recommend wearing a padded arming cap underneath the mail.

You can perfectly complement this coif with a matching butted mail shirt from our collection.
