Chainmail Coif, Butted 10mm 16G, Blackened Steel, Size L
4-in-1 Butted Ring Construction
The coif is carefully woven in the European 4-in-1 pattern, where each ring passes through four others. It uses butted (unriveted) rings with an inner diameter of 10 mm, made from 16 gauge (1.6 mm) mild steel. This type of construction is flexible, comfortable to wear, and represents an affordable option for chainmail armour. The coif features an anatomical cut that covers the head and neck, extending into a mantle to protect the shoulders.
Protection for Your Persona
The blackened (oxidised) finish gives the coif an authentic patina while also protecting the steel from surface rust. It is the perfect choice for the persona of a raider, mercenary, knight, or any warrior at LARP and SCA events. It provides basic costume protection and looks excellent when combined with a gambeson or worn under a helmet.
Important Notice: This chainmail coif is primarily intended for costume purposes, LARP, theatre, and historical re-enactment. As the rings are butted (unriveted), this armour is not designed or certified for full-contact combat such as buhurt (HMB, Battle of the Nations). For such activities, please look for riveted armour in our selection.
A Glimpse into History: The Essential Hauberk
The chainmail coif was a key component of armour for hundreds of years, popular from the Early Middle Ages (e.g., with Vikings and Normans) through to the High Middle Ages. It was worn either on its own or, more commonly, under a plate helmet (like a great helm or bascinet) to protect the neck, back of the head, cheeks, and shoulders – areas the helmet didn't reach or where flexible protection was needed.
Care for Your Blackened Chainmail
The blackened (oxidised) finish provides good protection against rust, but it is not 100% rust-proof. To make your coif last as long as possible, it is important to keep it dry. After each use, especially in a humid environment or after contact with sweat, dry it thoroughly and lightly oil it (e.g., with WD-40 or another mineral oil). Store it in a dry, ventilated place.
