Viking 'Lucet' Cord-Making Tool, Horn or Bone

How to Use the Lucet

It might look complex, but the opposite is true. It's an elegant and meditative technique. The images show the process step-by-step:

  1. Thread your yarn through the lower hole (E) and anchor it.
  2. Wrap the yarn around the two "prongs" of the fork in a figure-of-eight pattern.
  3. Lift the bottom loop on one prong over the top loop and let it drop off the back.
  4. Repeat on the second prong.
  5. Wrap the yarn in a figure-of-eight again.
  6. Repeat steps 3 and 4.

As you continue this process, a strong, square cord will begin to emerge from the central hole (D). You can feed the finished cord through the lower hole (E) to keep it out of the way as you work.

A Glimpse into History: The Viking Tool

The lucet is a tool with a history stretching back to the 9th century, to the time of the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons. Archaeological finds of these forks made from horn, bone, or wood are relatively common. They were crucial for making durable cords used for everything from laces and belts to drawstrings on clothing and pouches. It was a simple yet incredibly effective technology used by men and women across all social classes.

Care for Natural Materials

Whether you choose horn or bone, both are natural materials and require special care to last a lifetime.

  • NEVER leave the lucet soaking in water for long periods.
  • NEVER wash it in a dishwasher. The hot water and chemicals will irreparably damage it.
  • Hand wash only in lukewarm water and dry immediately.
  • Protect it from extreme temperatures (heaters, direct sunlight), as it could warp or crack.
  • To maintain its lustre, you can occasionally polish it with a little mineral oil or beeswax.

Note: As this is a natural material, every piece is an original. It may vary slightly in colour shade, texture, or minor details.
