Create Your Own Masterpiece
These rings allow you to unleash your creativity. They are ideal for making a complete chainmail shirt (hauberk), a mail coif, a standard or bishop's mantle, or for adding mail sleeves and a skirt (voiders) to your plate armour. They are equally perfect for repairing damaged armour. The process is simple: using two pairs of pliers (ideally one flat-nosed and one needle-nosed), you open a single ring, thread it through four closed rings, and then close it securely. This creates the basic 4-in-1 pattern, the most common weave for European chainmail.
A Link to History
For centuries, chainmail was the dominant form of protection for warriors across many cultures, from the Celts in antiquity to the knights of the High Middle Ages. Although the most durable historical armours used riveted rings, butted mail was also used and is perfectly suited for re-enactment, LARP, and cosplay. It provides an authentic appearance and sufficient durability for general use.
Did you know? In the Middle Ages, crafting a single chainmail shirt could take several hundred hours and consist of 20,000 to 30,000 individual, hand-riveted rings. Your task will be significantly easier!
Care and Maintenance
To ensure your new armour lasts as long as possible, proper care is essential.
- Zinc-coated rings: This version is virtually maintenance-free. The zinc provides excellent protection against rust. Simply store the armour in a dry place.
- Blackened rings: The blackening offers basic protection, but to prevent corrosion, it's important to keep the armour dry and lightly treat it with a preservative oil, such as WD-40 or Ballistol, after each use (especially in damp conditions).
Important Considerations
These butted rings are not designed for full-contact combat sports like buhurt or the Battle of the Nations, as they can be forced open by a strong impact. We recommend wearing protective gloves when working with pliers and rings to protect your hands from scratches and calluses.
