Hand-Forged Speakeasy Door Grill 11.5", Wrought Iron Medieval Window Grille

Where It Finds Its Place

This versatile grill isn't just for doors. Its robust and stylish look is well-suited for a variety of applications:

  • A Speakeasy or Judas Hole Grill: Perfect for creating a secure viewing window in a solid front door, gate, or entryway, allowing you to safely see who is outside.
  • A Security Grille for Small Windows: An excellent and stylish security solution for small cellar windows, pantry windows, or windows in outbuildings.
  • A Decorative Accent Piece: Mount it on a wall as a unique piece of art, a trellis for a climbing plant, or as a rustic grate for a wall niche.
  • For Themed Spaces: An essential element for creating atmosphere in escape rooms, historic pubs, LARP fortresses, or stylish Prohibition-themed bars.

From Monasteries to Secret Bars

Small, grilled windows have two famous roles in history. The first is medieval: so-called "Judas holes" or peepholes were a common feature in the gates of monasteries and castles. They allowed the gatekeeper to safely communicate with visitors without having to open the massive and heavy main gate. The second role is much more modern and gave the grill its English name, "Speakeasy Grill." In the 1920s, during American Prohibition, these grilles were the hallmark of secret bars (speakeasies). A doorman would identify patrons through the grille, only admitting those who knew the password.

A Tale from History: "Speak Easy!"

The name "Speakeasy" for these illicit bars arose from simple caution. Owners and bartenders would urge their patrons to "speak easy" about the establishment to avoid tipping off the police and federal agents enforcing the Prohibition laws. The small window with its grill and sliding cover became an iconic symbol of this era, filled with gangsters, jazz, and illegal glamour. This grill is your direct ticket to the atmosphere of the Roaring Twenties.

Installation and Care

Easy Installation

This grill is designed for surface mounting. If you are installing it over an opening, ensure the opening is slightly smaller than the grill's outer dimensions. Then, position the grill, level it, and mark all eight holes for drilling. Pre-drill pilot holes and fasten the grill securely with the eight screws included in the package.

Caring for Your Ironwork

Hand-forged steel with an oil-blackened finish is very durable. For outdoor use where the grill will be exposed to rain, we recommend occasionally wiping it with a cloth and a drop of conservation oil to maintain its color and rust protection. Indoors, it is virtually maintenance-free.

What to Avoid

This grill serves as a visual and basic mechanical barrier. It is not designed as a certified high-security anti-burglar grate for a home's main windows. Its strength is always dependent on the material into which it is anchored.
