Medieval Steel Greaves, 13th Century Shin Protection (1.6mm / 16G)

Design and Construction

These greaves (sometimes referred to as schynbalds) are hand-forged from 1.6mm (approx. 16 gauge) mild steel. This thickness makes them fully functional for historical reenactment battles. A central ridge runs down the length of the shin, providing not only a historical look but also structural rigidity to better deflect blows.

  • Secure Fit: Each greave is secured to the leg with two sturdy leather straps and steel buckles, ensuring they stay in place during combat.
  • Durability: The interior is painted black to help resist rust caused by sweat and humidity. The edges are smooth to prevent chafing against your clothing.
  • Adjustability: As these are "demi-greaves" covering only the front, they can accommodate a wide range of calf sizes comfortably.

Historical Context: The Goliath Connection

It is a common misconception that plate armour for the legs appeared only in the late Middle Ages. In reality, warriors began reinforcing their mail chausses with steel plates as early as 1245–1250. A primary source for this is the Maciejowski Bible (Morgan Bible), where the giant Goliath is depicted wearing greaves of this exact style. Initially designed to protect the shin—a highly vulnerable target for infantry—these plates evolved over time into fully enclosed greaves. However, this open-back style remained in use for centuries due to its convenience and versatility.

Care Instructions

Steel requires maintenance to prevent corrosion:

  • Cleaning: Always wipe the greaves dry after use. Do not store them wet or damp.
  • Oiling: Apply a coat of oil (such as WD40, Ballistol, or mineral oil) to the metal surfaces during storage to prevent rust.
  • Restoration: If surface rust appears, it can be easily removed with a polishing cloth or fine steel wool and a little oil.

Safety Note

While the 1.6mm steel provides excellent protection against cuts and blunt impacts to the shin, please remember that the back of the calf remains exposed. For the best experience and safety, we recommend wearing these greaves over padded chausses or thick woolen hose to cushion impacts and prevent abrasion.
